General DeWitt Spain airport is located about 2 miles north of downtown Memphis along the east bank of the Mississippi River. After several years of being relatively stagnant in terms of growth, new ownership of the FBO in the late nineties resulted in a resurgence of activity at this unique airport. In addition, many of the aircraft as well as the FBO owners that were located at the Arlington, Tennessee airport (LHC) relocated to M01 following the unfortunate closure of LHC.  DeWitt Spain is now a very active field. It is home to EAA Chapter 182, and it is common for experimental aircraft and World War II era war birds to be active in the vicinity. The FBO offers aircraft rental and flight training.

All downwind legs are flown over the river (to the west of the runway), which results in a right hand traffic pattern for Runway 16. The reason for this is that there are several radio towers about 1 mile northeast of the airport that extend to about 850 feet MSL.

As the airport closest to downtown Memphis, DeWitt Spain offers very convenientClick for larger image access to some popular Memphis attractions, including Mud Island River Park, The Pyramid Arena, the Memphis Convention Center, the Rendezvous Restaurant, and the Peabody Hotel, to name a few.
